Cultivating Learning Through Every Harvest
From Soil to Self-Reliance: The Impact of One Woman’s Vision and a Seed Grant
Zainab Oladimeji Adebeso began EduKultivate with a clear intention: to create a learning space where children could understand food, soil, and sustainability through their own hands. As a fellow in Agriculture and Sustainable Environment and a Teach For Nigeria fellow, she saw how food insecurity affected students’ focus and wellbeing. She envisioned a garden that could open doors to confidence, knowledge, and possibility by introducing young learners to organic farming, sustainable agriculture, and climate-smart practices.
“My goal is to help children realize that knowledge and nourishment can grow side by side.” — Zainab Adebeso
Through hands-on activities that blend farming with environmental stewardship, she shaped a program that nurtures curiosity, practical skills, and community resilience—an approach that quickly began shifting perceptions about what learning can look like.
What a Seed Grant Made Possible
The Pollination Project seed grant became a catalyst for this vision, enabling EduKultivate to expand into three additional schools and reach far more children than Zainab could have imagined at the start. With grant support, she equipped classrooms with essential tools, irrigation systems, seeds, compost bins, and materials that allowed each school garden to flourish.
Impact at a glance:
• 437 children reached
• 3,432 volunteer hours contributed
• Increased engagement and climate-education outcomes
• Hands-on experience in sustainable agriculture and small-scale entrepreneurship
For many students, these gardens became places of discovery and pride.
“This is the first time I planted something and ate what I grew,” one young learner shared.
By integrating food security, environmental awareness, and practical agriculture, the project strengthened each school’s ability to sustain the gardens long beyond the initial funding period.
Growing Into the Future
With a strong foundation in place, EduKultivate is now onboarding two additional schools and preparing for broader outreach across the state. Plans to introduce tree crops will deepen nutrition benefits and expand climate-education opportunities.
Zainab remains focused on building a future where young people understand the link between sustainable agriculture, community wellbeing, and their own potential.
Through the support of The Pollination Project - and the dedication of educators, volunteers, and students - EduKultivate continues to grow, not just in scale but in the lasting possibilities it seeds for every child who steps into the garden.
